BREAKING: APC LOSES TWO SITTING SENATORS TO PRP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State has suffered a major political setback following the defection of two serving senators, Shehu Buba Umar and Sama’ila Dahuwa, to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development is believed to be connected to growing discontent within the APC over the emergence of former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, as the party’s governorship candidate.

Senator Buba, who had initially indicated interest in contesting the APC governorship primaries, withdrew from the race barely 24 hours before the scheduled exercise. In a statement explaining his decision at the time, the senator cited alleged lack of internal democracy, manipulation of the primary process and imposition of candidates within the party structure.

Following his resignation from the APC, the PRP leadership moved swiftly to adopt him as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 Bauchi governorship election, a move political observers say could reshape the political landscape in the state.

Similarly, Senator Dahuwa, who only recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, reportedly became dissatisfied after indications emerged that he might not secure the party’s ticket to seek re-election to the Senate.

His decision to leave the APC for the PRP was subsequently confirmed, with the party announcing him as its consensus senatorial candidate for Bauchi North in the 2027 elections.

The twin defections are being viewed as a significant blow to the APC in Bauchi State, especially as political realignments continue to intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle. Analysts believe the entry of two high-profile lawmakers into the PRP could strengthen the party’s visibility and competitiveness in the state.
