Grassroots Sports Drive in Ekiti Gains National Attention as Oyebanji’s Re-election Push Builds Momentum

A grassroots sports development initiative in Eporo, Emure Local Government Area, is drawing national interest after it produced new sporting talents while simultaneously strengthening political support for the re-election bid of Biodun Oyebanji.
The programme, spearheaded by the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, Olusola Osetoba, reflects a growing trend among subnational governments leveraging grassroots engagement to drive both youth development and political capital ahead of future elections.
Held over the weekend, the sporting outreach attracted wide participation from youths and children, featuring a mix of recreational and competitive activities including table tennis, relay races, sack races, and a football match in which Rising Stars FC edged Akeye United 1-0.
At the end of the exercise, five young athletes were identified for further development, underscoring the programme’s dual objective of talent discovery and community engagement. The selected participants are expected to proceed to the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium for advanced training and possible inclusion in youth development camps.
Speaking at the event, Osetoba said the initiative aligns with the administration’s broader commitment to expanding opportunities in both the sports and youth development sectors. She noted that investments in infrastructure, training, and athlete welfare have begun to yield tangible outcomes across the state.
“What inspired this initiative is the vision of the current administration towards the sports and start-up ecosystem. There has been consistent support in terms of infrastructure, equipment, and welfare packages,” she said.
She added that the outreach forms part of a wider strategy to deepen grassroots participation in sports while also sensitising communities to government programmes. According to her, what began as a developmental initiative evolved into a spontaneous show of support for the governor.
“I did not expect it to turn into a rally. The response we have seen is a reflection of the impact the Governor has made on the people,” Osetoba stated.
Political observers note that such community-based engagements are increasingly becoming a strategic tool in Nigerian politics, blending governance outreach with electoral positioning as incumbents seek to consolidate support ahead of re-election cycles.
At the local level, the initiative has been widely praised by party leaders. The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Emure-Ekiti, Gabriel Ominiyi Monday, described the programme as unprecedented and commended the state government’s development efforts, particularly in the education sector.
He pointed to ongoing renovations in public schools, including the venue of the event, as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving social infrastructure.
“This is a one-of-a-kind event for this community. Beyond sports, we are seeing real development in our schools and public facilities. The Governor has done well, and the people appreciate it,” he said.
Participants and beneficiaries of the talent hunt also expressed enthusiasm, pledging to maximise the opportunity provided to them and represent the state in future sporting engagements.
The event concluded with the presentation of prizes to winners across various categories, reinforcing its community appeal and celebratory tone.
Analysts say the convergence of youth engagement, infrastructure development, and grassroots mobilisation in initiatives such as this may signal a broader template for political strategy at the state level, with potential implications for national electoral dynamics as the 2027 election cycle gradually takes shape.
