Ekiti Environment Commissioner Urges Residents to Exercise Caution During Heavy Rains The Ekiti

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, has urged residents across the state to exercise caution and prioritise their safety as heavy rainfall continues.

The Commissioner, speaking against the backdrop of recent heavy downpours across parts of the state, advised motorists, tricycle operators and Okada riders to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall.

She urged road users to reduce their speed, maintain safe distances and avoid flooded roads, waterlogged areas and other locations where accumulated water could pose a danger to lives and property.

Erelu Aluko-Ajisafe also called on residents to keep their surroundings, gutters and drainage channels clean and free from refuse, warning against indiscriminate dumping of waste in waterways and drainage systems.

According to her, the state government has continued to implement measures aimed at mitigating the impact of heavy rainfall, including the clearing and desilting of drainage channels, removal of obstructions from waterways, monitoring of vulnerable locations and prompt intervention whenever environmental hazards are identified.

The Commissioner further advised residents to stay away from flowing water, drainage channels and unstable structures during heavy rainfall. She also urged the public to exercise caution around trees and electrical installations and promptly report fallen trees, blocked drains, flooding and other environmental hazards to the appropriate authorities.

She stressed that residents have a significant role to play in maintaining a safe and healthy environment, noting that responsible waste disposal and compliance with environmental regulations would complement government efforts to prevent flooding and other rain-related hazards.

Erelu Aluko-Ajisafe assured residents that the Ministry would continue to monitor environmental conditions across the state and collaborate with relevant agencies to safeguard lives, protect property and promote a safer environment for all residents.
