Herdsmen attacks leaves farmers dead in Bassa Kogi State
A harrowing incident has been reported in Kogi State, where suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked farmland in Oguma, Bassa Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of about 10 people. Abdulkareem Jimoh, a resident and farmer, recounted the traumatic experience, stating that the herdsmen launched a commando-style attack on January 8, 2024.
According to Abdulkareem, the assailants opened fire on Mr. John Anighoro Otajonor and his family members while they were working on the farm. "We were working when we heard gunshots. Initially, we thought they were Boko Haram, and we all ran for our lives. After the shooting stopped, we searched for our families and friends."
Upon returning to the village, they found many people had been shot and killed, with properties destroyed. A search party discovered Mr. Otajonor's lifeless body in a pool of blood, and his daughter-in-law was found to have been brutally raped.
Another villager corroborated the account, stating that many were shot, raped, or stabbed. Some victims were taken to the hospital, where Mr. Otajonor was confirmed dead. The attack has left the villagers fearful, with some abandoning their farmland and properties to seek refuge elsewhere.
Attempts to reach the divisional police officer for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. The victims included Mr. John Anighoro Otajonor, Janet Andy, Lucia Bacha, and several others.
